The Giza Pyramids has contributed significantly in making Egypt famous. The pyramids lie in the Al Giza desert, in the peripheries of Cairo. They served as graves for ancient Egyptian pharaohs and their wives.

The El Djem Amphitheatre is an ancient amphitheater located, in the city of El Djem, Tunisia, ancient Thysdrus, in the Roman province of Africa. The oval shape architecture of the amphitheater was inspired by the Colosseum of Rome.

The Amphitheatre of El Djem was built in  238 AD, in order to host different kind of events, and was big enough to seat 35000 spectators. It was undoubtedly one of the biggest amphitheaters in the world at that time. Inside the amphitheater, you can see the seats and the arena which are still in perfect shape.

El Djem Amphitheatre is a well protected monument, and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. You should visit it if you get the chance to travel to Tunisia.

3- THE PYRAMIDS OF SUDAN

The ancient kings of the Nubian Kushite kingdoms ( current Sudan) built they own pyramids, obviously inspired by Egyptians. The pyramids served as tombs for the kings and queens who ruled the kingdom at that time. Some of these pyramids are still standing today and attract many visitors from all over around the world. 

The first pyramid in Nubia was built in El Kuru in 751 BC, and currently, there are around 250 pyramids standing there. Nubian pyramids are different from the Egyptian’s one because they are taller and more narrow. In order to preserve the pyramids, they have been listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sudan may be the right place to explore pyramids because it is less crowded by tourists, and it offers a larger array of pyramids to discover.

The Leptis Magna was originally a 7th century B.C. old city. Actually, the Roman Emperor, Septimius Severus redesigned and rebuilt it in early third century. It has been a major city of the Carthaginian Empire in the Mediterranean. 

Currently, Leptis Magna ruins are located on the Mediterranean shore, at around 129 Km (80 Mi) east of Tripoli, the capital city. This UNESCO site is one of the well-preserved Roman archeological site in the Mediterranean.

5- TELOUET KASBAH, MOROCCO

Telouet Kasbah, also known as the Palace of Glaoui, is a citadel along the old route of the caravans from the Western Sahara over the Atlas Mountains to the city of Marrakech. In fact, the Kasbah stands at an elevation of 1800 m ( 5,900 ft), giving it a strategic position in the High Atlas.

Telouet Kasbah was built between the 18th and 19th centuries. It features some of the best Islamic architecture in Morocco and is definitely worth visiting. I believe it is one of the most popular historical monuments in Africa.

Luxor is a city located in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate. It is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. The city is also Famous for its ancient Egypt sites. Founded in 1400 BCE, Luxor, also known as Thebes, was a thriving city in ancient Egypt era. 

Luxor has been the religious capital of Egypt until the later Greek period. It was indeed the glorious city of the god Amon-Ra. The remains of the temple complexes of Karmak and Luxor lie within the modern city. On the opposite side of the Nile River, you can see temples, monuments and tombs situated on the west shore.

7- ELMINA CASTLE, GHANA

The Portuguese built the Castelo de Sao Jorge da Mina, current Elmina Castle In 1482, as the first trading port built on the Gulf of Guinea. It is the Oldest European building located south of the Sahara. The castle played evidently a major role during the Atlantic Slave trade.

To gain access to the castle, you will have to pay an entry fee. This entry fee also includes a free guided tour of the castle, which will take you to the grim dungeons, the punishment cells, the Door of No Return and also the turret room, where the British imprisoned the Ashanti king, Prempeh I.

Elmina Castle is a historical monument. Reason why it is part of the UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

The Great Mosque of Djenne (Grande mosquée de Djenné‎) is a huge banco building that is considered by many architects to be one of the greatest achievements of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style.

Volubilis is an ancient Beber city, which actually dates back to the 3rd century BC, and its ruins stand near the city of Meknes in Morocco. It used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania. In fact, the city was ruled by the Romans from the first century AD until 285 when the locals regained control . 

Volubilis was undoubtedly a thriving city which riches came essentially from olives production. The city was inhabited until the 11th century when it was abandoned. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a well preserved ancient Roman architecture.

The ruins at Volubilis are open every day and you have to pay a small entree fee before you get access, and official guides are also  available.

Bojo beach is situated at the delta of the Densu River and the Atlantic Ocean, in the south-eastern part of Ghana. It is accessible via a short boat ride across the Densu River. Once you get there, you can enjoy a quiet, less crowded and comfortable beach, especially on weekdays.

The weekends on the contrary are quite animated, with music and more people coming to have a good time. The water is clean and warm, and the waves are beautiful. Swimming is allowed within a certain area which is regulated by the life guards.

The only downside is that you can’t bring your own food or drinks. Nevertheless, there is a bar on the beach where you can get some drinks and also a restaurant where you can get food.

The Serengeti National Park is a national park located in the Mara and Simiyu regions in Tanzania. It is especially famous for its annual migration of over a million white-bearded wildebeests and also zebras, Nile crocodiles and honey badger. However, the most famous animals in the park are lions, African leopards, elephants, black rhinos and Cape buffalo.

Furthermore, the landscape consists of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest, and woodlands.

Chobe National Park is Botswana’s first national park, and also the most biologically diverse park in the country. In fact, Chobe National Park is located in northern Botswana, specifically near the vast inland Okavango Delta. It is also Botswana’s third largest park.

The park hosts a large population of animals such as elephants, Cape buffaloes, lions, antelopes, hippos and many species of bird.

4- KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, SOUTHERN AFRICA

Kruger National Park is a National Park in South Africa and one of the largest game reserves in Africa. In fact, it covers an area of 19,485 km2 (12,113 sq mi) in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The park was established as the South African first national park in 1926. Furthermore, it is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere which is an area designated by the UNESCO as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve.

5- OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA, SOUTHERN AFRICA

The Okavango Delta is an inland delta, precisely an alluvial fan that covers between 6000 to 15 000 square kilometers of Kalahari Desert.

Firstly, it is located in northern Botswana and owes its existence to the Okavango River.

Secondly, all the water reaching the delta is evaporated and does not flow into any sea or ocean.

Finally, it became the 1000th site to be officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in June 2014.

6- ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK, NAMIBIA, SOUTHERN AFRICA

Etosha National Park is a national park in northwestern Namibia. It became a game reserve in March 1907 and a national park in 1967. The park covers an area of 22,270 km2 (13,837 sq mi). It was named after the large Etosha pan which is located within the park.

Etosha National park hosts several species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

7- BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK, UGANDA, EAST AFRICA

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, along the DRC border, near the Virunga National Park and on the verge of the Albertine Rift. The park is only accessible by foot.

It is home to many animals, specifically 120 species of mammals, 348 species of birds, 220 species of butterflies, 27 species of frogs, chameleons, geckos, etc.

Moreover, the park is known for its rich vegetation, including over 1,000 flowering plant species, 163 species of trees and 104 species of ferns.

8- HWANGE NATIONAL PARK, ZIMBABWE, SOUTHERN AFRICA

Hwange National Park is the largest natural reserve in Zimbabwe. It lies in the west, between Bulawayo and the Victoria Falls. Indeed, the park was established in 1928. It is close to the edge of the Kalahari desert, a region with obviously little water and a very scattered vegetation.

In fact, area is home to around 100 mammals and 400 bird species including all Zimbabwe’s protected animals.

9- MOSI-OA-TUNYA NATIONAL PARK, ZAMBIA, SOUTHERN AFRICA

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It contains half of the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River, and the other half lies in Zimbabwe.

The vegetation consists specifically of tall riverine forest with palm trees, miombo woodland and grassland. however, the fauna includes Angolan giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, warthog, sable, Cape buffalo, impala and antelope.

10- NGORONGORO NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA, EAST AFRICA

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha, Tanzania. It got its name from Ngorongoro Crater which is a wide volcanic caldera within the area.

The area is also home to several shield volcanoes and the northwest section of the conservation area consists of the Serengeti Plains, the Salei Plains, the Oldupai Gorge, and the Gol Mountains inselbergs.
